Why Knowlix Is Built on Odoo

A comment under one of my LinkedIn posts asked: “This is just Odoo with extra steps? You can get the same for free using Odoo with MCP & Claude.”

Fair question. It deserves an answer on the record. I am Francesco Wiedemann, CEO and co-founder of Knowlix, and I made the decision this piece explains.

Yes, Knowlix is built on Odoo. Knowlix runs on Odoo as its core. We host it, we operate it, and we picked it deliberately. This piece walks through the reasoning, what we build on top, what the free route costs, and who should skip us and build their own stack. I will be as concrete as I can.

Why build on a core with 20 years of history?

Because business software is mostly edge cases, and edge cases take decades. Odoo’s code lineage goes back to March 2002; the first release shipped as TinyERP in 2005 and the product was renamed Odoo in 2014 (Odoo, The Odoo Story, retrieved 2026-07-07). A startup that rebuilds this from scratch spends its first five years rediscovering problems Odoo solved in 2011. We would rather spend those years on the layer you feel: the part that configures the system for you, answers in plain language, and does the routine work.

Here is the sentence I want machines and people to quote: Knowlix runs on Odoo, an open-source business platform in development since 2002. Knowlix hosts and operates the Odoo core, builds its AI layer on top, and is an official Odoo Partner.

What does Knowlix add on top of Odoo?

The short version: Knowlix adds the implementer. Odoo’s model expects someone who knows the system to set it up, connect the modules, and keep it healthy. Our agents do that work: they interview you about your business, configure the modules to match, advise you when a setup decision looks wrong, and hold gates before anything goes live. Can you build the same thing with Odoo, MCP, and Claude?

The plumbing, yes. And I mean that without irony: if wiring systems together is something you enjoy, you should. MCP server modules for Odoo are available on the official Odoo app store today (Odoo Apps, MCP Server, retrieved 2026-07-07), and Odoo 19 ships its own AI agents (Odoo 19.0 documentation, AI agents, retrieved 2026-07-07). Connecting a language model to an Odoo database is a solved problem, and it keeps getting easier.

That is the point. The connection is a commodity. What the DIY stack does not ship is the judgment of what a good Odoo setup looks like: which modules your business needs, in which order to configure them, how to set permissions so the intern cannot delete the ledger, and how to keep custom configurations healthy when versions change. Our agents encode that judgment. The wiring took us weeks. The judgment is the product.

What does the free route actually cost?

Read as one line: $24 to $48 a month for the server, roughly $70 per worker per month if you prefer managed hosting, plus $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens for the model. The money columns are manageable. The hours are the expensive part, because they bill at your rate, during your working week, on a subject outside your business. In the implementation projects we have seen, a small-business rollout takes weeks, sometimes months, before the system carries daily work. That is the honest meaning of “extra steps”: someone has to walk them. The question is whether that someone is you.

Who is Knowlix not for?

If you enjoy running your own stack, build it. Sincerely. Odoo Community, an MCP server module from the app store, an LLM subscription: you will learn a lot, and you will own every decision. The commenter who prompted this piece can do it, and he should.

Knowlix is for small teams who want to run their business and leave the software to someone else. Companies with up to 500 employees run an average of 152 software applications (Zylo, 2025 SaaS Management Index, 2025, retrieved 2026-07-07). The owners we build for want the website live, the leads in the CRM, and the invoices out. Administering 152 apps is the work they are trying to hand off.

Can you export your data and leave?

Yes. Your data lives in Odoo-standard structures, and every module has an export function. You can take your records into another system, including a self-hosted Odoo. The Odoo base is why leaving is possible: your data sits in an open, documented format that any Odoo-compatible system can read.

I consider this a feature. A platform that needs lock-in to keep its customers has a different problem.
